50 Mile Canoe Trip 2013

50 Mile Canoe Trip We did a 6 day, 50-mile High Adventure trip with the older scouts in the troop. We canoed for 2 days on open water on Spednic Lake before portaging around the dam at Vanceboro and canoeing the St. Croix River. In addition to white water canoeing through class I and II rapids, we focused on Dutch Oven cooking for the entire trip and some highlights were the Breakfast Burritos, Chicken Pot Pie, Jambalaya, Peach Cobbler and some fantastic Pizza. Several scouts did some fishing and were catching small mouth bass. We experienced most types of weather including some beautiful sunny days and some rainy days with intermittent thunderstorms.

Delaware Water Gap Canoe Trip

Delaware Water Gap Canoe Trip We canoed 20 miles down the Delaware River and camped overnight on an island in the river. We had heavy rains on our trip down on Friday night and stayed in a lodge at BSA Camp Turrell in Cuddebackville, N.J. The weather was perfect on Saturday and we paddled 14 miles from Eshback Access to Tocks Island. We carried all of our equipment in the canoes and camped that night on Tocks Island. The next morning we paddled 6 miles and pulled out at Kittatinny Access in the Water Gap. The river cuts through the Appalachian Mountains and the views were awesome.

Pioneering Outing

Pioneering Outing We just returned from a Pioneering weekend were we constructed a double platform monkey bridge out of timbers and rope. This was the first large pioneering project any of the scouts had done. The Scouts carried in all of the materials and constructed the platforms and bridge themselves. Every Scout and adult leader were able to cross the bridge that afternoon before being disassembled and carried back out.

Purgatory Chasm

Purgatory Chasm We camped at Purgatory Chasm and did a lot of hiking in and around the chasm. During our second hike through the chasm we completed a service project by cleaning out debris. We had several of our new scouts on this outing and spirits were high. The older scouts found a small cavern and set up lighted checkpoints to allow all of the scouts in the troop to explore it. For having 100% participation in the Popcorn Sale last fall, each patrol got Dunkin’ Donuts on Sunday Morning.
