Welcome back, I hope everyone had a good summer. The troop had a great summer with Camp Squanto and a 50-mile backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail. Over the past month all of new scout leaders have been trained and have been working on organizing their patrols. We’ve added two more patrols for a total of seven and it looks like it’s going to be a great year!

The first Troop meeting will be this Tuesday, September 11.

50 Mile Backpacking Hike (High Adventure Trip)

50 Mile Backpacking Hike Some of our older scouts just returned from a 6 day, 50 mile backpacking hike along the Appalachian Trail. We started in Tyringham MA, summited Mt. Greylock and finished in North Adams all the while carrying our gear and food supplies. Prior to going on our 50 mile hike in August, we all went on a 10 mile practice hike in the Blue Hills in July.

Survival Weekend 2012 (Over 14 Trip)

Survival Weekend Seven of the older scouts recently spent the weekend learning survival techniques and camping with minimal gear. Instead of tents, we used tarps and ropes to build our shelters. We cooked our meals directly on the fire and enjoyed cake cooked inside of our orange peels. Thanks to all of the mosquitoes visiting us on the first night, we all learned not to build our shelters near a vernal pool.

Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater Rafting Last weekend we went whitewater rafting on the Deerfield River in western Massachusetts. It was the first whitewater trip in a while and everyone had a good time. One patrol got the royal treatment and had the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster as personal chefs for selling the most during the last fundraising event.

Downhill Ski Trip 2012

Downhill Skiing We visited Crotched Mountain in New Hampshire for the 2nd year in a row. Several scouts had never skied or boarded before but learned during this trip. Most of the scouts skied until 2:00 a.m. and then were able to ski all day the next day too. The lift lines were very short and at times, non-existent. Scouts could hang around the large bonfire to warm up.

Klondike Derby 2012

Klondike Derby We competed in the annual Seven Rivers District Klondike Derby and enjoyed some winter camping. We built 3 new sleds and placed in several of the team competitions. 2 sleds with 4 scouts each competed in the Mountain Man competition which tested our skills in Archery, Rifle and chopping logs. One of the teams finished in 3rd place. Our troop won first place in the Site Gateway competition.
